He was an early writer in the ''yomihon'' genre and his two masterpieces, ''Ugetsu Monogatari'' ("Tales of Rain and the Moon") and ''Harusame Monogatari'' ("Tales of Spring Rain"), are central to the canon of Japanese literature.
