Founded in 1861, MIT provides its students with an education that combines rigorous academic study and the excitement of discovery with the support and intellectual stimulation of a diverse campus community. It offers more than 55 undergraduate majors and about 60 undergraduate minors, spanning various disciplines including engineering, mathematics, chemistry, political science, finance, literature, architecture, management, and physics, among others. It also has about 30 departments and programs offering graduate degrees. The school's student-to-faculty ratio is 3:1 (undergraduates).
