Resumen:* Public health historically has been the first concern of environmental planning and management. This took the form of protection against the major hazards of the burgeoning urban growth. The very success of environmental health controls on water and food supply, general sanitation of public and private spaces, and insect control has provided opportunities for environmental management for other purposes unrelated to public health.
