To increase the opportunity for personal contact and the informal exchange of ideas a series of luncheons and luncheon speakers have been proposed; these will deal with such topics as computers in scientific applications, computers in industrial control and automation, computer applications to accounting and management, and the future of computers.The Association for Computing Machinery was founded in 1948 with an original membership of 78. Other papers were on aThe Production of Technical Abstracts and Abstracting Technique," by J. E. L. Farradane, Scientific Information Officer at the Tate & Lyle Research Laboratories; "Abstracting: Collation and Production," by K. E. Burnell, Economics and Statistics Department, Unilever, Ltd.; "Reproduction Processes and the Technique of Block Making," by Martin Hepher, Kodak Research Laboratories; "Letterpress Printing," by T. Chapman, Head of the Letterpress and Foundry Department at the London School of Printing and Graphic Arts; "Some Unusual Methods of Reproduction," by Frank H. Smith, Lecturer at the London School of Printing and Graphic Arts; "Design and Layout,' by Mrs. Beatrice Warde, Publicity Manager at the Mono- type Corporation, Ltd.; and a summary of the lectures by F. B. Roberts, Editor of Engineering.It has been recommended that ASLIB publish a handbook on the subject which would provide more detail than was possible at these sessions.INTERNATIONAL SOCIAL SCIENCE DOCUMENTATION The International Committee for Social Sci-ence Documentation is undertaking a study of the bibliographic organization of official publications.
