Whakarāpopotonga:Management information required by the Cataloging in Publication (CIP) division of the Library of Congress was analyzed, and a system was developed to produce information about the work flow in a cataloging program. CIP managers held brainstorming sessions to identify statistics that would help them manage the CIP program and its operations. A fact sheet summarizing various aspects of each target statistic was compiled. The JANUS program was used to maintain a file containing all CIP records and updates, but it was found to be limited in that it could not perform statistical calculations on the raw data. Therefore, software containing 4 components was developed: 1. an online interface, 2. a conversion program, 3. a statistical analysis system (SAS), and 4. files to hold statistics. The CIP program can use the software system to build other statistical programs as they are needed. Managers will benefit from having information about the program to balance and complement managerial vision, experience, and intuition.
