520 3 |a To some SNET employees and a rival union, the Communications Workers of America, the proposal's terms show that the local union bows too easily to company demands. CWA, a large international union, has long wanted to bring the almost 8,000 SNET workers into its fold. Organizers for the larger union say bringing the CUTW into their ranks would mean better contracts for SNET workers and build union strength in negotiations with other regional telephone companies. CUTW leaders, however, say the rivals are merely mounting a power grab aimed at bringing in more dues for the parent union. Last week, the CWA launched a campaign to get workers to vote down the accord, arguing that its terms fall well below those negotiated by the CWA in its recent settlements with other companies. Union representatives questioned why SNET and the CUTW were pushing for approval of a new contract seven months before the current pact is set to expire.
