"CANTICO" TO "CLAMOR": THE RUPTURE (SPAIN; JORGE GUILLEN)

| Abstrakt: | The numerous studies which have dealt with the poetry of Jorge Guillen are reviewed in the first two chapters. These confirm (1) the limited (thematic and biographical) perspectives employed up to the present day; (2) the ambiguity caused by a number of contradictory statements and misconceptions propounded by Guillen's "cr(')iticos mas fieles"; and (3) the rigid concept of unity throughout Guillen's complete works based on their exterior, architectural design and Guillens's desire from the beginning that his creative production be considered as a whole. Taking as a critical model Carlos Bousono's practical application of his theory of the evolution in "cosmovisiones" (employed in La poes(')ia de Vicente Aleixandre and recently expanded into a full theoretical proposal), the author studies the definite rupture which occurred in the last two editions of Cantico and continued into Clamor. This rupture is observed in the poetic voice, the expanded thematic development and emphasis and in the progressive movement toward a versification employing free verse, as well a longer, more discursive narrations. The use of prose-poems in Clamor is highlighted to confirm the evolution away from the perfect short forms found in Cantico which present an immediate, joyful and harmonious moment, to the more chaotic, negative and compromised position expressed throughout the poetry of Clamor. These ruptures in poetic voice, theme and versification are constantly viewed from the concept of the differing "cosmovisiones," that is the passive world-view of Cantico contrasted with the active, more cognizant position of Clamor. |
