BLACK HIGH-SCHOOL SENIORS' ATTITUDES TOWARD COMPUTERS AND SELECTION OF COMPUTER-RELATED COURSEWORK AND CAREERS

| Resumen: | Problem. An important concern is whether Black high-school seniors will be able to move into the information age with full computer literacy. The purpose of this study was to assess the relationships of attitudes towards computers among Black high-school seniors. Procedures and Methods. Black high-school seniors randomly selected from public and parochial accredited high schools in the San Francisco Bay Area (N = 49) participated in the study. A cross-sectional, time-bound survey design was used to collect the data using an instrument developed and validated by the writer. There were 370 students in the study. Correlations were used to relate attitudes (toward computers, computer-related careers, and computer-related courses) with behaviors (previous coursework in mathematics and science, previous computer-related experiences, previous coursework in computers, and interaction with Black role-models in computer-related fields). Comparative statistical procedures were used to determine differences in attitudes or behaviors among groups of students divided on the basis of gender, grade point average, parent educational level, parent occupational status, and type of school attended. Results. Two canonical correlations were found to be statistically significant at p < .05. The most significant finding showed a favorable attitude towards computer courses was correlated with a higher number of computer courses and a higher number of Black role-models. Conclusions. It is important to develop educational programs to reach Black students in their early educational training in order to facilitate attitudinal change. As Black youth acquire favorable attitudes towards computers, particularly in their early educational experiences, it is conceivable that increased participation will be reflected in the areas of science, technology, and computers. |
