| Resumen: | The purpose of this dissertation is to study the relationship between poetry and music from a music theory perspective. That is to apply musical concepts to the analysis of poetry and create a glossary of terms to explain the parallels between music and poetry. Up to the Twentieth Century, the concept of music in poetry has been directly connected principally to the elements of rime, meter, and regular verse. However, from the emergence of avant-guard styles, specifically with the introduction of free verse, the definition of music in poetry has changed. Some critics (for example, Tomas Navarro Tomas and Rafael Lopez Estrada) have attempted to explain and define the role of music in contemporary poetry. Although valuable in providing new analytical techniques for poetic appreciation, none of their analyses has produced a satisfactory definition of the relationship between poetry and music. In this dissertation, one presents a series of parameters that help to clarify the correspondence in space, time, rhythm, language, color, and structural gestures that exists between those two arts. Rather than an analytical method or technique, one deals with parameters that point to the common ground between poetry and music. Those parameters could be accurately applied to poetry from different periods and styles. The format of this work consists of an introduction, four chapters and a conclusion. The introduction exposes the main points to be studied and describes how the topic of this dissertation is going to be developed. The first chapter explains the reasons that justify a study of Latin American Poetry from a music theory perspective. The second chapter presents an analysis of the mayor elements that musical rhythm and poetic rhythm have in common. The third chapter deals with the study of structural and formal aspects in both music and poetry through the analysis of various poems by major Latin American poets from the Baroque period to current time. And the last chapter is an analysis of four large works: El sueno by Sor Juana Ines de la Cruz, El Ano Lirico by Ruben Dario, Altazor by Vicente Huidobro and Blanco by Octavio Paz. Many poets and critics improperly use musical terms in relation to poetry. Therefore, this dissertation includes a glossary of technical terms, in both poetry and music, which will define precisely the concept of music in poetry, clarify the parallels between the two arts, and help with the understanding of the creative process in the area of poetry. |
