Manuel Bilbao and the First Chilean Historical Novel. Critical Introduction and Annotated Edition of “The Great Inquisitor”

| Resumen: | This dissertation examines the presence of the Spanish Inquisition as a literary subject of historical fiction in Latin America in the XIX century and it focuses on the first Chilean historical novel entitled El Inquisidor Mayor (Lima 1852, 1859 and Buenos Aires, 1872) and its author Manuel Bilbao (Santiago 1827 - Buenos Aires 1895). The result is a contemporary annotated edition based on the fourth and latest edition of the novel with footnotes to account for textual differences and historical and geographical notes; a biography of its author and a preliminary in-depth study of El Inquisidor Mayor. Although the novel has continuously been cited in surveys of Latin American literature, there is neither a contemporary edition nor a comprehensive study of the novel. Chapter I provides an ideological context for the novel by reconstructing an extensive biography of Manuel Bilbao and an ample bibliographic catalogue of works by this prolific and versatile writer, journalist and historian. The literary value of the novel is enhanced by the connection of its subject matter with the nation-building project of liberalism. In Chapter II, we ascertain El Inquisidor Mayor as a historical novel of inquisitorial theme, a literary subject shaped after European historical fiction. Then we examine the interaction between history and fiction in the narrative by identifying the historical sources, particularly, the inquisitorial process of Francisco Moyen, main historical character in the novel. Chapter III is devoted to a literary examination of the text that draws on different notions of literary criticism. Through textual criticism we have reconstructed the writing process of the novel; classic literary analysis has been useful to identify structural patterns of nineteenth century novels, and sections of theories of masculinities and feminism have yielded insight on the contradictions between the authorial voice and the pervasive message of emancipation of subaltern characters like women and slaves. Esta disertación examina la presencia de la Inquisición española como sujeto literario de ficción histórica en América Latina en el siglo XIX y se enfoca en la primera novela histórica chilena titulada El Inquisidor Mayor (Lima 1852, 1859 y Buenos Aires, 1872) y su autor Manuel Bilbao (Santiago 1827 - Buenos Aires 1895).El resultado es una edición contemporánea comentada basada en la cuarta y última edición de la novela con notas a pie de página para dar cuenta de las diferencias textuales y notas históricas y geográficas; una biografía de su autor y un estudio preliminar en profundidad de El Inquisidor Mayor. Aunque la novela ha sido citada continuamente en encuestas de literatura latinoamericana, no existe una edición contemporánea ni un estudio completo de la novela.El Capítulo I contextualiza ideológicamente la novela al reconstruir una extensa biografía de Manuel Bilbao y un amplio catálogo bibliográfico de la obra de este prolífico y polifacético escritor, periodista e historiador. El valor literario de la novela se ve realzado por la conexión de su tema con el proyecto de construcción nacional del liberalismo.En el Capítulo II, constatamos El Inquisidor Mayor como una novela histórica de tema inquisitorial, un tema literario conformado a partir de la ficción histórica europea. Luego examinamos la interacción entre historia y ficción en la narración identificando las fuentes históricas, en particular, el proceso inquisitorial de Francisco Moyen, personaje histórico principal de la novela.El capítulo III está dedicado a un examen literario del texto que se nutre de diferentes nociones de crítica literaria. A través de la crítica textual hemos reconstruido el proceso de escritura de la novela; El análisis literario clásico ha sido útil para identificar patrones estructurales de las novelas del siglo XIX, y secciones de teorías de masculinidades y feminismo han arrojado luz sobre las contradicciones entre la voz del autor y el mensaje generalizado de emancipación de personajes subalternos como mujeres y esclavos. |
