Resumo:The purpose of the project was to identify factors influencing application, enrollment, and retention in the four-year part-time evening/weekend program at Lawrence Memorial/Regis College Collaborative Nursing Program (LM/RC) to, determine changes that would enhance applicant interest and enrollment. The research questions addressed were: (1) What internal and external factors influence student enrollment in nursing? (2) What enrollment and retention practices are used at three evening associate degree nursing (ASN) programs in the state and two ASN programs outside of the state that have maintained desired enrollment? (3) What factors do accepted applicants, enrolled students, and graduates perceive as being most important to enrollment in the part-time evening/weekend program? (4) What factors do the potential applicant pool perceive as being influential in choosing a part-time program of studies? (5) What factors have caused currently enrolled students to consider changing from the part-time evening/weekend program to the full-time day program? (6) What is the enrollment/retention model that should be incorporated into the evening/weekend program at LM/RC? (7) What are the best strategies to implement the proposed model at LM/RC? (8) What criteria should be to evaluate the model at LM/RC? The methodologies used were a combination of evaluation and development processes. Procedures included literature review, development and administration of questionnaires, review of student records, guided interview, and formative and summative committee review. A part-time three-year evening/weekend program model was developed with changes in course sequencing from the current four-year program. Also developed were a plan for implementation and evaluation for the revised program model. The study concluded that adult students pursuing nontraditional nursing programs are seeking flexibility, recognition of previous education, financial assistance, acknowledgment of family and employment responsibilities, and a program that can be completed in three years or less. Recommendations from this study included accepting the part-time three-year program model, implementation plan, and evaluation plan and increasing the maximum number of credits allowable for transfer. It was further recommended that the results of the study be disseminated to professional publications and shared at professional conferences. Last, it was recommended that future research should address the recruitment and retention of minority students to ASN programs and the preparedness of the nontraditional student entering an ASN program.
