| 520 | 3 | |a Coffee is one of the most widely consumed food products in the world. The more than 3.2 billion cups consumed daily worldwide demonstrate its global social importance. It is consumed primarily in countries with high per capita income and is produced mainly in developing countries and on small-scale farmers who are highly dependent on coffee sales. The characteristics of the coffee plant mean that it can only be grown in regions with a tropical or subtropical climate.It is a labor-intensive crop, so it has a significant capacity to stimulate local and regional economies. Because it is well-suited to regions with rugged terrain, it is typically grown on land where its production has low opportunity costs. When grown in steeply sloping areas, mechanization of agricultural work is not possible. | |
