Thresholds of the Sublime: Life, Death, and Nature in the Works of Emily Brontë

| Resumen: | Although not always duly recognised, Emily Brontë’s influence on the cultural, literary, and artistic world is undeniable. More than 175 years after the first publication of her works, hundreds, if not thousands, of critical studies have sought to unravel not only the intricate web of her narrative devices, structures, and characters but also the originality of her ideas and the complexities of her poetic creations.This dissertation examines the works of Emily Brontë, including both her poetry and her sole novel, Wuthering Heights(1847), intertwining them with the operational concept of the Sublime, in its various dimensions. The Sublime is considered transversal to the thematic categories of her work's poetic and narrative structures, not only with regard to the natural landscape—particularly the moors and the wind—but also to her times, characters, events, and dialogues. Drawing upon the theories of the Sublime proposed by thinkers such as Longinus, Edmund Burke, and Immanuel Kant, as well as the ensuing debates, including Mary Wollstonecraft’s critique of Burke, this study explores how the Sublime serves as a lens through which Brontë’s writing negotiates the boundaries (or absence thereof) of human experience.Through a detailed formal and structural analysis, this dissertation focuses on a selection of five paradigmatic poems, branching out into other related lyric compositions, and also her novel Wuthering Heights,thus emphasising how Brontë’s recurring exploration of thresholds—between the self, the Other, and nature—both represents and triggers the Sublime. The findings reveal that Brontë’s depiction of the Sublime interconnects with and emerges from the persistent conflict between life and death, with natural, physical, metaphysical, and psychological thresholds acting as powerful catalysts for this dynamic. This study not only illuminates the richness and complexity of Brontë’s works but also paves the way for further exploration of the intersections between the Sublime, liminality, and reader engagement in other works and literary traditions. Mais de 175 anos após a primeira publicação das suas obras, centenas, se não milhares, de publicações críticas tentaram já desvendar não só a sua teia intricada de recursos narrativos, estruturas e personagens, mas também a originalidade das suas ideias e as complexidades das suas criações poéticas.Nesta dissertação, analisamos a obra de Emily Brontë, tanto a sua poesia como o seu único romance, Wuthering Heights(1847), entrelaçando-a com o conceito operacional de Sublime, nas suas diversas dimensões. Considera-se o Sublime como transversal às categorias temáticas tanto das estruturas poéticas como narrativas da sua obra, e não só em relação à paisagem natural – particularmente as charnecas e o vento – mas também relativamente ao seu tempo, às suas personagens, eventos e diálogos. Com base nas teorias do Sublime postuladas por pensadores como Longinus, Edmund Burke e Immanuel Kant, e nos debates que se seguiram, incluindo a crítica de Mary Wollstonecraft a Burke, este estudo explora as diversas formas como o Sublime serve como uma lente através da qual a escrita de Brontë dialoga com os limites da experiência humana (ou a falta deles).Através de uma análise formal e estrutural detalhada, centra-se numa seleção de cinco poemas paradigmáticos, ramificando-se, depois, para outras composições líricas com eles associadas; e também no seu romance, Wuthering Heights,focando-se na forma como a sua reiterada exploração de limiares – entre o eu, o Outro e a natureza – não só representa como desencadeia o Sublime. Este estudo revela que a representação do Sublime em Emily Brontë se interliga e emana do persistente conflito entre a vida e a morte, com os limiares naturais, físicos, metafísicos e psicológicos a atuarem como um poderoso catalisador desta dinâmica. O seu resultado ilumina a riqueza e a complexidade das obras de Brontë, abrindo também a porta a novas investigações sobre as intersecções entre o Sublime, a liminaridade e o envolvimento do leitor noutras obras e tradições literárias. |
