In the last years, the use of distributed sensor systems has significantly expanded, spanning a very diverse set of application areas. For smart sensor systems to really become effective and efficient, there is an urgent need to address relevant research challenges, including the effective integration of sensing and machine intelligence, robust and efficient networking, interoperability and scalability, dependable autonomy, human interaction, as well as important aspects of security, privacy and trust. Since its creation, DCOSS has been focusing on the above information processing issues for distributed sensor systems, covering models, algorithms, architectures, deployment tools, and novel applications. In 2023, DCOSS has broadened its scope beyond sensor networks to smart systems in general as well as the Internet of Things (IoT), to become “Distributed Computing in Smart Systems and the Internet of Things” (DCOSS-IoT). This choice has substantially raised interest in the community, as witnessed by the remarkable increase in submissions in the last years, including a record number in the 2025 edition.
