| Resumen: | Este artículo examina la recepción de «The Pit and the Pendulum» de Edgar Allan Poe en España a través de sus primeras traducciones y su influencia en la literatura española del siglo XX. A partir de una traducción publicada en 1887 por Enrique Leopoldo de Verneuil, con ilustraciones de Fernando Xumetra, se analiza el impacto de esta obra dentro de las colecciones literarias. A lo largo del siglo XX, diversas ediciones de «El pozo y el péndulo», algunas ilustradas y muchas sin atribución de autoría, contribuyeron a su popularización en España, incluso en contextos de censura y control editorial durante la posguerra. El estudio subraya la importancia de los traductores y de los ilustradores en la construcción de la imagen de Poe en el ámbito hispánico, destacando figuras como Verneuil, Farrán y Mayoral, y Cortázar, cuya influencia perdura en la tradición española. This paper examines the reception of Edgar Allan Poe's «The Pit and the Pendulum» in Spain through its early translations and its influence on 20th-century Spanish literature. Based on a translation published in 1887 by Enrique Leopoldo de Verneuil with Fernando Xumetra's illustrations, the study analyzes the impact of this work within literary collections. Throughout the 20th century, various editions of «The Pit and the Pendulum» –some illustrated, many of them unattributed– contributed to its popularization in Spain, even within contexts of censorship and editorial control during the postwar period. The study emphasizes the importance of translators and illustrators in shaping Poe's image in the Spanish-speaking world, highlighting figures such as Verneuil, Farrán y Mayoral, and Cortázar, whose influence continues in the Spanish tradition. |
