| Resum: | The rise of the Internet of Things (IoT) led to the development of multiple communication protocols and data models. This created interoperability problems because devices using different communication protocols and data models can’t understand each other. IETF SDF shows up as a solution for the existence of various data models, allowing for the representation of these data models in one. This way, every device can understand the information of the others.Built on top of IETF SDF and the MQTT protocol, NextGenGW is a gateway that allows the intercommunication between devices that communicate via different protocols, through bindings between IETF SDF and MQTT.The interoperability problem also spread to the field of Industrial Internet of Things (IIoT), where it is common to have different machines on the shop floor, each using its own communication protocol and data format. However, the usability of IETF SDF was not assessed for industrial scenarios, since it was designed for regular IoT use cases. Consequently, NextGenGW wasn’t designed for these scenarios. This is the problem that this thesis focuses on: assessing the suitability of IETF SDF and NextGenGW in industrial contexts.Throughout this document, we analyze the various levels of interoperability and explore several industrial communication protocols and whether they define a data model. From these, we choose OPC UA as the one to be used in the compatibility study with IETF SDF. If we can use IETF SDF to represent OPC UA data, we can prove that it is suitable for industrial scenarios. When exploring existing converters between IETF SDF and the OPC UA information model, one was found, but it was only available in the IETF SDF to OPC UA direction. Therefore, we developed our converter in the opposite direction, which, even though it doesn’t support all OPC UA features, proved to be a good stepping stone, generating IETF SDF documents from OPC UA Nodes. To evaluate the MQTT-IETF SDF bindings proposed by NextGenGW and its supported operations with OPC UA, an integration was developed in which a message sent via MQTT triggers an action in an OPC UA server. Even though only a subset of OPC UA operations was tested, it proved to be feasible with acceptable execution times and memory usage. |
