Multi-criteria decision-making approach for evaluating the critical determinants of machine tool integrity

Resumen:Abstract Machine tools degrade with time, and critical determinants influencing machine tool integrity are often unknown, overlooked, and with multiple conflicting criteria during operation and maintenance. This study introduces a hybrid fuzzy DEMATEL–ANP framework to assess and prioritise the determinants of machine tool integrity. Key integrity determinants were identified using literature reviews, expert opinions, and questionnaires. The Fuzzy DEMATEL established cause-and-effect relationships between determinants, while the ANP technique modelled their interdependencies and prioritized them based on their impact on machine tool integrity. Using empirical data collection, critical determinants such as machine tool beds and guideways were identified and evaluated alongside less significant parameters like illumination and weather conditions. This process was facilitated by a developed integrity software named INTEGMAC to numerically determine the integrity. Initial 79.21% total integrity was obtained on INTEGMAC using synthetic data, and subsequent enhancements through INTEGMAC-recommended remedial actions led to 97.2% integrity highlighting Integmac’s proven responsiveness and effectiveness to input data. This study characterises machine tool integrity into four groups namely the death knell parameters, pseudo-death-knell parameters, living parameters, and superfluous parameters providing decision-makers with a subjective assessment tool to evaluate each determinant’s relative importance, while also offering a platform to optimize integrity following manufacturer’s performance specifications.
