| 520 | 3 | |a The purpose of this phenomenological study was to explore rural high school teachers' perspectives on their observations of students multitasking with mobile devices and their attention spans. Random sampling was used to select 11 rural high school teachers. Data was collected through individual semi-structured interviews and analyzed using a phenomenological thematic approach to gain insights from the teachers' viewpoints. This study identified six themes: (1) heavy media multitasking shortens attention spans, (2) students struggle with compulsive device checking, (3) students with mobile device access show a decline in academic performance and focus, (4) students suffer from an illusion of multitasking, (5) teachers feel a need for classroom management and feel a need for teaching adaptations, (6) students who multitask during class demonstrates less socialization. The research offers the teachers' observations and recommendations to address issues arising from students having access to their mobile devices during school. | |
