Pues bien, en esas sociedades de masas en las que vivimos actualmente y en un mundo en el que la democracia liberal se haya en una profunda crisis y en el que la pasión dominante a escala global es el miedo, la confianza del pensador inglés en el progreso de la humanidad plantea la cuestión de si es posible aun albergar esperanzas sobre el futuro del orden político liberal o si los remedios en los que él creía -ensayados ya en su mayoría- han quedado obsoletos en un mundo cambiante e inestable en el que el progreso empieza a ser considerado un mito y "una reliquia de la Ilustración". En definitiva, se trata también de analizar hasta qué punto el liberalismo está (o debe estar) radicalmente vinculado a una visión esperanzada y optimista del progreso humano. John Stuart Mill's liberal thought is often considered a clear example of progressive and optimistic liberalism, and to a large extent this is an accurate interpretation, although Mill himself also expressed doubts about the future of liberalism and democracy, mainly due to the inexorable rise of the masses to power. Well, in the mass society in which we currently live, and in a world in which liberal democracy is in a deep crisis and where the dominant passion on a global scale is fear, the English thinker's confidence in the progress of humanity raises the question of whether it is still possible to harbor hope for the future of the liberal political order or whether the remedies in which he believed -most of which have already been tried- have become obsolete in a changing and unstable world in which progress is beginning to be considered a myth and "a relic of the Enlightenment". Ultimately, it is also about analyzing to what extent liberalism is (or should be) radically linked to a hopeful and optimistic vision of human progress. | |
