| Bài tóm tắt: | A driver at a four-way stop decided not to wait her turn and immediately followed the car in front of her. It didn't matter that drivers at the other three streets had patiently been waiting. Then, as I began to merge onto Interstate 5, the driver behind me cut across the yellow separation bumps to enter the highway ahead of me, cutting me off. Discourteous and inattentive drivers have become as big a hazard on our nation's highways as drunken drivers, according to a regional representative of the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration. Mike Baldwin, an administration representative, said that being a courteous driver and paying full attention is more important than ever today because of our overpopulated highways. What does this mean to you and me? Until remedies can be made -- increasing mass transit systems, building and widening roads -- and even afterward, we are going to have to be more patient when we drive, practice courtesy, obey rules of the road and take the responsibility of driving seriously. No more reading the newspaper, putting on makeup, drinking coffee, talking on the cell phone and doing other things while behind the wheel. |
