It describes four sequences for teaching writing developed by four teachers at four different levels--kindergarten through grade three, intermediate grades, grades 9 through 12, and remedial--that share the following similarities: (1) all are based on the teachers' observations of the development of writing abilities in their students, (2) all treat writing as a process that may move through several stages rather than merely as the creation of finished products to be evaluated by the teacher, and (3) all view the teacher's role as one of assisting and encouraging student writers individually in finding the most effective written form for their ideas.
