Deciding factors in the parents' decision for a cochlear implant

| Resumen: | With the early identification of hearing loss in newborn hearing screenings and lowered age restrictions on cochlear implant surgery, parents of deaf children face many important and difficult choices very early in their child's life. The objective of this study was to identify deciding factors that led parents of deaf children to choose a cochlear implant for their child and to look at the variety of information and resources that were available to these parents. Using a survey research design with quantitative as well as qualitative elements, 24 parents responded to questions regarding professionals or other individuals who played a role in the education and decision process, the kinds of information that was available to them prior to making the decision, the main reasons why they chose a cochlear implant for their child, the mode of communication used by and with the child before and after implantation, and their satisfaction with the decision. Research found that although a majority of parents were satisfied with the outcome of cochlear implantation, most parents were not fully informed about many important issues regarding deafness or options for their child when making this important decision. |
