Summary:Rural areas in El Salvador have experienced transformation after the process of neoliberal globalization. Reality of rural families has not been of interest in this new scenery, and in general little is questioned about the effects of this change in the global framework of accumulation of inequality between the country side and the city, the damage of a sustainable production, and the emergent of new ways of making non- traditional families coming from disintegration due to socioeconomic issues. This study aims to analyze the characteristics and need of rural families. To that purpose, it was taken as subjects, families who were living in the North rural area of Ciudad Barrios town at San Miguel. It was applied a descriptive- explanatory investigation model, with a mix focus, of transactional achievement. Findings demonstrate new characteristics in the structure of rural families compared to the traditional nuclear and extended and strong male domination in the culture. The socioeconomic environment of homes presents a series of needs such as: access to high school and higher education, permanent health service, water, electrical energy, and houses without moderate condition. Conclusions emphasize an increasing of poverty and vulnerability as a result of the lack of productive conditions with enough sustainability to provide development and social mobility of rural families to the town.
