description Alcohol and tobacco: dependence, motives, disorders and consumption in studen in of Mazatlan.Purpose and method of the study: The purpose of the study was to determine the dependence to the tobacco, the disorders by consumption of alcohol and the relationship that exists between reasons for the consumption of tobacco and alcohol and the consumption of tobacco and alcohol in students of Mazatlan, Sinaloa, Mexico. The design of the study was descriptive correlational. The sampling was stratified random, with proportional allocation to the strata school, semester, and sex. The sample size was determined based on a correlation considering a level of confidence of. 95, for a unilateral test, alternating correlation of.20 and power of 90%, was obtained a sample of n = 300.The instruments used were the Fagerstrom Test For Nicotine Dependence (FTND), The Smoking Motives Scale (SMS-18), The Alcohol Use Disorders Identification Test (AUDIT), and the Reasons for Alcohol Consumption questionnaire (CMC).Contribution and conclusions: the results showed that the type of consumption of tobacco that prevails is the experimenter type (61.7%), followed for the user (32.5%) and the dependent (5.8%). The reasons for smoking were the psychological reasons ( =25.65, SD=16.26), followed by social motives ( =13.26, SD=15.87) and the physical reasons ( =12.70, SD=18.60). Positive and significant correlation of the reasons for smoking tobacco and tobacco consumption was found (rs =. 571, p = 05). In terms of alcohol consumption prevailed harmful consumption (43.1%), followed by the sensible consumption (34.6%) and consumption-dependent (22.4%). Presented significant differences in alcohol consumption by sex (χ2=5.05, p=.001), men had higher consumption of harmful type (50.5%) and women sensible consumption (47.7%), followed by the harmful consumption (29.9%). Significant difference per semester was founded (χ2=16.35, p=.03) and difference by occupation (χ2=12.72, p=.002). The main reasons for alcohol consumption are the social reasons ( =37.96, SD=25.20) and the reasons of reinforcement, ( =20.89, SD=21.66). The motives for consumption of alcohol showed significant positive association with the consumption of alcohol (rs=.592, p=.001).
