| Riassunto: | Defending the environment has deadly consequences all over the world. Despite that, there is an alarming trend in Latin America. Numbers reveal that between 2002 and 2019, 1,345 people were murdered in the region while protecting the land, territory, and environment. The abovehas made it possible to show a strong tradition of activism for nature, which was inherited from the native peoples of the region. The fight and resistance have transcended historical periods based on the needs, resulting from the consequences of the depredation of the neoliberal capitalist system that favors the reproduction of colonial practices. El Salvador is no stranger to this context since four environmental defenders were killed because of their fight against metal mining in the country. Additionally, a context prevails that favors the intimidation and criminalization of the defense of natural common goods and violates the rights of access to participation and information in environmental matters for communities to benefit economic business interests. Institutions fail at trying to guarantee conditions conducive to defending human rights, given the absence of a comprehensive protection system that makes it possible to remedy legal gaps and operational deficiencies in the execution of specialized mechanisms for the situation of environmental defenders. |
