Abstrakt:	El personaje protagónico de la obra es Mersé, una mulata joven que por haberse criado con una familia rica de la capital, donde su madre trabajaba como criada, ha adquirido unos modales y una educación que la convierten en un ser "extraño" dentro del solar. Hidalgo is an assistant professor of Spanish in the Department of Languages, Literatures and Cultures at the University of South Carolina-Aiken. Presently, he is researching his latest project Nation and Discourses: The Voice of the Subaltern, examining the economic and social development of blacks and mestizos in eighteenth and nineteenth century Cuba.
